When
giving or receiving Reflexology, it is very important to consider the link
between the mind and body, the emotions and issues around the client at
that particular time in their life or even at the time of development of
illness and symptoms.
The state
of a person, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually can be seen to
be very important and relevant when looking at the health and well-being
of an individual. We are all very aware of the ill effects that stress has
on our bodies, so if a situation arises which is particularly traumatic
and/or emotionally trying, there is every possibilty that our bodies
express that in some way.
When
giving a treatment, it is very important to me to have a brief history of
the person having Reflexology, as the therapy itself can and does have
strong effects the emotional body and issues which they may be going
through or have been through. The time given to treatment allows the
person to reflect upon any issues or events which have affected their
health and well
-being
and promotes healing and balancing.
This is
by no means a new idea. Many therapists have written about the
relationship between emotions and a person's well-being. Many people are
researching and becoming more aware of the need for positive emotion and
thought in the treatment of
illness
and disease.
Thousands
of chemical messages are sent throughout the body every minute of the day
and there is evidence to suggest that our moods can affect the way that
these are sent and received. The nerves receiving messages must also be
affected in the same way, as if a there is an area of tension in the body,
that tenseness must then challenge the effectiveness of the messages
being received or carried.
Emotions
can
lock
themselves into certain areas of the body, of which I see often from my
client base.
Several authors have written of this relationship. Here are a few examples
of this line of thought:
| "Dizziness - ..a
loss of centre, of stability and groundedness." |
| "Indigestion - ..the
reality we are dealing with and taking in is creating upset and
disharmony within us." |
| "Gallstones -
...mental and emotional patterns of irritation and bitterness towards
other people, or situations in our lives
that
upset us...which congeal and harden, being painful to release." |
| "Cystitis - ..a
build-up of negative emotion that need to be released whilst finding
independent ground
to stand on." |
(Taken from "The
Bodymind Workbook" - Debbie Shapiro.)
The most
common problem which seems to affect a lot of people is ' Irritable Bowel
Syndrome'. When looking at a client's situation, there usually exists a
build-up of stress and tension in their life at that moment in time which
they are finding hard to release and is very personal to them
..
This causes an inner irritation as their reality is doing just that.
It
just shows that our bodies tell us more than we really give them credit
for, and if we were to listen to them a bit more closely we would find we
become more aware of maintaining the balance of our own health and
well-being.
Reflexology is a very powerful tool for the balancing and focusing of the
mind, body and emotions to counter any negative influence which may lead
to illness. It also gives an opportunity to resolve and heal emotional
issues and deep seated traumas which may have affected health and
well-being. The promotion of a person to heal itself through a natural
therapy is very important in the age of a highly medicated society whose
ills lie in the depths of a stressful and faster life-style and world.
Relaxation and therapies do all they can to focus and balance whilst
keeping the emphasis on individual health and well-being.
