There are three main principles which give a deeper
understanding of the way it works.
Firstly, there are thousands of nerve endings in the feet which travel the
length and breadth of the body. These are stimulated by the massage of the
reflex areas in the feet which positively affects the nerve function
within the body.
Secondly, the massage of the reflex areas stimulates the lymph and blood
circulation, aiding the removal and elimination of waste products,
also improving gland and organ function. Reflexology facilitates the
release of toxins which can cause slight side-effects after treatment;
such as a head-ache (which is most common), cold or flu symptoms, needing
to visit the toilet more often, irritability, or just simply a calm, tired
feeling. As long as plenty of water is consumed following treatment, the
side-effects are usually minimal as the toxins work their way out of the
body.
Thirdly, Reflexology is also based upon the ancient Eastern belief of
energy meridians which exist within the body, giving it its life force.
The energy meridians are the basis for the practice of Acupuncture and are
also affected by the stimulation of the feet. Rebalancing these energy
meridians is also another effect of Reflexology, although it doesn't have
the same direct stimulation of specific points as Acupuncture does.
